In the alchemical tradition, which Jung used as a language to describe psychological transformation, the work with gold always began with the prima materia — the lowest, most rejected, 'dirty' substance (nigredo). Excrement in a dream is an image of this exact raw primary matter: that which the psyche discards as unnecessary, shameful, or unworthy of attention, but which in fact can be the raw material for turning into something valuable. It is no coincidence that in folk superstition such a dream is interpreted 'by opposites' as money: disgust on the surface often masks a process where the most unsightly content of the Shadow begins working for you, if you do not repress it, but look closely.
